Still can’t get the PDF Makers to show up in Office 2007! Time to go deep!

posted in General |

Ok, I have been getting a lot of you that still cannot get your PDF Makers in Office 2007 to come back after Office decided to lock them out. Here is a link to the original “Adobe Supported” approach to fixing the problem.

So let’s see, you’ve done everything you know of to get the PDF Maker Addin to work, well there is one thing that I have held back on, a registry edit that will bring them back. This approach is not for the faint of heart, but it is a very easy (as registry edits go) fix and if you do just what I say here (no clowning around in the reg please) then you can’t hurt your machine.

Take a deep breath, relax, take a big swig of Redbull and let’s do this thing!

Ok first off, this works with both Windows XP and Vista.

  1. Go to the Start Menu and select Run (in Vista you must go to Start Menu, Accessories, Run)
  2. On the Run Dialoge box you will see a Browse Button, select that and go to c:\windows\regedit.exe (you can also type it in)
  3. You should see the Registry Editor come up and look like thisreg1.png
  4. Now expand the key by selecting the small arrow to the left of the folder icon
  5. Keep expanding till you get to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\Addins\PDFMaker.Office.Addin (whew, that took a while)
  6. Now click on PDFMaker.Office.Addin you should see something similar to what is shown here on the right side panel reg2.png
  7. Ok almost done, Double Click LoadBehavior and type in 3 make sure the dialoge looks like this:reg3.png

That is it, now go back to Word and See if it is there, if not, follow the procedure outlined in the previous post.

Ok it’s early on Tuesday morning, so I better get to the office, Keep some life in your life!

Tim

Final word in installing Adobe Acrobat 8 Professional with pre-installed Microsoft Office 2007. (December 7, 2007)
I never failed in installing any application during my life. Adobe Acrobat 8 Professional failed to convert office 2007 files into PDF format. I spend whole day in resolving issue. Finally I succeeded. Make a clean complete install of Adobe Acrobat 8 Professional by closing all applications including anti-virus and anti-spywares. Install Update 8.10 for Adobe Acrobat 8. You are done. Everything will work. Feel free to install update 8.11.
In case of failure, before installing Adobe Acrobat 8 Professional enable all macros in Trust Center settings in Office 2007. Uncheck all boxes on Ad-ins tab in Trust Center.
This work as donated to Adobe and Microsoft products in appreciation of their great products.

I had the same problem after I have installed Acrobat 8.1 update. Worst: Adobe PDF Printer was missing. I made all and nothing happened. Finally I revert to Acrobat 8.0 through a clean install. Nothing. Then I found this fix on the Web. Now at least Adobe PDF Printer is back. So I can say it work for Windows Vista Home Premium (32 bits) also. Here the fix:

    1. Type “C:\Windows\inf” into the search box on the start menu.
    2. Locate the INFCACHE.1 file and right-click it and select Properties.
    3. On the INFCACHE.1 Properties window tab to the “Security” tab and click the “Edit” button to change permissions on this file.
    4. On the Permissions for INFCACHE.1 window click the “Add” button.
    5. On the Select Users or Groups window click the “Advanced” button.
    6. A new Select Users or Groups window will open and then click the “Find Now” button.
    7. The search results are sorted alphabetically; locate the username you logon to Windows with and then double-click.
    8. Under the “Enter the objects names to select…” you should see something like this YOURCOMPUTERNAME\Yourusername
    9. Now click the OK button.
    10. You will now return to the Permissions for INFCACHE.1 window.
    11. Under the Permissions for Yourusername you need to tick “Full Control” under the Allow column. Click the “Apply” button and then the “OK” button.
    12. You will be prompted with a “Windows Security” window, just click the “Yes” button and continue.
    13. Delete the INFCACHE.1 file.
    14. Restart your computer.
    15. Open Adobe Acrobat 8.1
    16. Locate the “Help” menu item and click “Repair Acrobat Installation”
    17. Restart if requested to do so.

This fix worked on Windows Vista Business Edition (32-Bit).

I’ve tried the registry option (and found the key to be in a very different location and already set to ‘3′); tried every possible solution from this page: http://acrobat.timhuff.net/?p=29 but all to no avail.

The add-in is still on the disabled list and whenever I want to check the box it says something like “The add-ins from HKEY_LOCAL MACHINE cannot be changed.”

    Adobe Acrobat 8 Pro
